Finally got around to checking out HANCOCK which hit dvd shelves this week. The movie has a top notch cast which includes Will Smith a personal fav of mine and uber hot Charlize Theron who really knows how to look hot in just about anything. For added comedic value we also get Jason Bateman who is one of my favorite character actors, even if he only seems to play one type of character.

Hancock delves into a really unique take on the superhero genre and gives us a man with super powers who is neither hero or villain. He just does not give a crap. He is a drunk, a womanizer and he is notorious for destroying LA with his antics when he gets drunk and takes to flying, rescuing people or just plain getting mad. The premise of the film is as follows;

With great power comes great responsibility – everyone knows that – everyone, that is, but Hancock. Edgy, conflicted, sarcastic, and misunderstood, Hancock’s (Will Smith) well-intentioned heroics might get the job done and save countless lives, but always seem to leave jaw-dropping damage in their wake.

The public has finally had enough – as grateful as they are to have their local hero, the good citizens of Los Angeles are wondering what they ever did to deserve this guy. Hancock isn’t the kind of man who cares what other people think – until the day that he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman), and the sardonic superhero begins to realize that he may have a vulnerable side after all. Facing that will be Hancock’s greatest challenge yet – and a task that may prove impossible as Ray’s wife, Mary (Charlize Theron), insists that he’s a lost cause.

Right off the bat my huge beef with this movie has nothing to do with the film at all but rather the DVD art. This is the first time ever that I have picked a movie off the shelf and had the DVD art completely ruin the film for me. Thats right... if you buy the Unrated Version of the DVD the very cool plot twist is sitting smiling back at you on the cover of the dvd. For this reason alone I encourage you NOT to buy the unrated version or to even look at it. I assume you like me want to enjoy your films as they unfold and not have the plot twists dropped in your lap when you pick it up off the shelf.

Charlize Theron delivers as the angry wife of Jason Bateman and of course Jason delivers well as the 'goofy guy with semi-smarts'.. a role he plays all to often. Will Smith one of my favorite 'action hero' actors delivers his role well as Hancock and although he by no means steals the show with his acting chops he does deliver a fun and entertaining experience. Charlize Theron on the other hand does steal the show and at times she seems out of place. Hancock is not a deep story, its an action film and when you throw somebody with Charlize's talents into the mix .. they tend to stand out and she did.

The story and plot of Hancock is well done and even though the plot twist was ruined for me by an idiot who doesn't know how to make DVD artwork the film did still have more twists I did not see coming. Overall its a fun, dark, comedic action tale that should please fans of Will Smith's and comic book fans in general. Its a new take on the superhero genre and one that I enjoyed despite some cliche moments.
